ISLANDR welcomes launch of Soil Hub in Poland
Nov 27 2023
A successful implementation of the objectives of the Mission "Caring for Soil is Caring for Life" by 2030 and fulfilling an active participation in initiatives such as the European Soil Partnership, require the exchange of knowledge and information and discussions between different audiences, including farmers, agricultural advisors, scientists, state and field administrations, politicians, planners, NGOs and industry representatives. The 'Caring for Soil is Caring for Life' mission aims to develop tools to help raise public awareness of the importance of soils and to deepen cooperation with citizens aimed at restoring soil health and function and promoting soil protection and regeneration through the establishment of a network of so-called 'living laboratories' and lighthouses demonstrating practical solutions under real-life conditions. To fulfil this ambition at the national level in Poland, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in cooperation with the State Research Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation (IUNG-PIB) in the ISLANDR partnership, are putting in place a joint initiative to establish a National Soil Hub. Its inaugural launch is scheduled to take place on 28 November 2023. Through its participation in a multitude of EU funded research projects, including ISLANDR, NBSOIL, NATI00NS, PREPSOIL, and the EJP SOIL project, IUNG-PIB is well placed to assist in implementing this ambitious initiative. The inaugural launch is being combined with an information day of the EJP SOIL project "Towards climate-smart sustainable management of agricultural soils". The National Soil Hub has been designed to involve all stakeholders in one place, creating a hub of knowledge excellence on all matters related to soils. Its tasks will include: - supporting the national implementation of the Mission "Caring for Soil is Caring for Life", - supporting the organisation of Living Labs and Lighthouses, - discussing the implementation and content of environmental, urbanisation and Common Agricultural Policy legislation, - optimising international cooperation in the framework of the European Soil Partnership, EIONET, the European Soil Observatory (EUSO) and other initiatives, - transfer of knowledge from and to international projects, - extending the discussion on soils, including their protection, to urban and peri-urban areas, - integration of soil issues into spatial planning, - harmonisation of monitoring research at national and European level, - linking soil issues to the bioeconomy, the circular economy, the rational use of waste and fertilisers, and water resources, - seeking and promoting innovation in sustainable soil management, - paying particular attention to the functions of and threats to soil functions and the ecosystem services provided by soils, and - the development of soil regenerative agriculture. The ISLANDR partnership wishes to convey its support and active encouragements towards the successful establishment of a National Soil Hub in Poland, thereby addressing EU key societal challenges.
